For the month of July I am attempting the Whole 30 challenge. Up until now, I have been what many people consider to be Paleo-ish. Apart from the occasional sushi, the odd pastry and a slightly more regular glass of wine, I have for the most part cut out grains, sugar, legumes and processed food from my diet. This is more than most, but it's not full blown Paleo. I've been eating this way on and off for the past three years and I have never managed to bring myself to cut dairy completely out of my diet. I have whittled it down to the bare minimum: a drizzle of double cream in my tea and coffee, butter to cook my food in and the occasional bit of cheese. In July, I will drink my tea and coffee black, I will replace my butter with coconut and olive oil and I will forgo the cheese.
In addition to the grains, sugar, legumes, processed foods and dairy, I will be giving up alcohol, tobacco and nightshades and drastically cutting down on my half-a-litre-a-day coffee habit. So what is left for me to eat? All the meat, fish, poultry, eggs and vegetables I can shake a stick at, with the addition of a small amount of fruit, berries, nuts and seeds.
I'm looking forward to this experiment. It will be tough, but I need to stick to my guns. I'll find it toughest when I am out socialising and everyone is drinking around me and I'll have to stick to tap water! And when people at work bring biscuits and cakes into the office. It'll be worth it in the end and I'm very interested to find out what will happen when I finally remove the dairy from my diet.
